Could I set up a small side business!

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

One of the most common questions we are asked is 'Do you think I'd be ok at running my own small business?'

In short, this question needs to be thoroughly reviewed and assessed and will depend on many factors, such your own experience, and personal strengths and weaknesses etc. but we do have a few preliminary questions that can help you think about whether running a small side business would be a good fit for you:

Are you:

  1. Independent and self motivated?

  2. Reasonably well organised and have good time management skills?

  3. A confident person?

  4. Open to criticism and happy to talk to / communicate with your clients?

  5. A (reasonable) risk taker?

  6. Ok with basic budgeting, accounting and costing skills?

  7. Happy to work on your own?

  8. Willing to learn?

  9. Resilient?

  10. An expert in and have a passion for at least one area?

You do not need to be:

  1. Extraverted.

  2. Overly creative (depending on the business of course). :)

  3. The holder of an MBA.

  4. Highly skilled in accounting + legal + regulations + social media + economics + real estate + technology + human resources + insurance + etc. etc.

  5. Have a huge bank account balance to start.

  6. An overly positive person, people with doubts can do it too.

  7. An overachiever.

  8. Someone who never makes a mistake.

  9. A people pleaser. (You do need to set boundaries with clients).

  10. Perfect.

We hope these few quick points can help you work though whether setting up your own business might be an interesting option for you and your future.
